The writing of Biker Chicz of North America -pt.5

By Wil De Clercq

Do I have a favorite biker chick? Well, uhm … no. I found them all equally interesting and engaging because they’re all survivors and strong women – women who break down barriers and stereotypes. Women who know who they are and comfortable being who they are – women who know what they want out of life and who have gone after it on their own terms and continue to do so. Women who have made a difference!

The writing of Biker Chicz of North America -pt.4

By Wil De Clercq

Fortunately Ed and all the women involved were very supportive and patient. At times they lifted my spirit. I interviewed each woman by phone over a period of three months. I used a set of general questions that were common to all. Then I proceeded accordingly to unlock their persona with specific questions. Each biker chick had submitted a brief biography to us – some had their own websites chockfull of info – and the specific questions were posed to delve deeper into the background they had provided. Sometimes we drifted off-topic, talking about mutual interests, etc. But those talks always provided further perspective into their character.

The process of transcribing the interviews took another twelve months, whenever I was able to write and or devote time to the project. Each profile then went back and forth between Ed, myself, and whoever’s story we were working on. We had an agreement with the women that they could read their profile for accuracy, before signing off on it. Although not standard procedure, it’s not unusual either. For a book like Biker Chicz of North America, it makes sense to involve the people you’re writing about.

The writing of Biker Chicz of North America -pt.3

By Wil De Clercq

Unfortunately the economic slide that had been triggered in 2008 by the banking disaster had a negative impact on our proposed collaboration with Harley; a four-to-three vote against the project led to its negation. As a result Biker Chicz of North America was born.

Throughout the writing of Biker Chicz, Ed was the driving force and inspiration to get it done. He acted as project leader, took care of lining up the women to be interviewed, suggested ideas and angles of approach, did the first draft of editing and permission releases, and after it was completed, handled the publishing and distribution of the book.

The writing of Biker Chicz of North America -pt.2

The Assimilation led to Biker Chicks: The Magnetic Attraction, which I edited and researched/wrote history related content. After the Biker Chicks experience, Ed’s intention was to write a book that featured women who actually rode their own motorcycles and had empowering stories to tell about their lives, and how their bikes fit into the equation.

The writing of Biker Chicz of North America – pt.1

By Wil De Clercq

It’s hard to believe that it’s been almost nine months since Biker Chicz of North America was published. It’s even harder to believe that my co-author, Edward Winterhalder, and I started the project more than two years ago. The very first interview, with Cris Sommer Simmons, was conducted on July 4, 2009. The finished manuscript was delivered in August of 2010, and then went to the copy editor, who returned it one month later. Then it went to the graphics design people and from there to press.

Little Biirdie told me this about the Conga Ride

General information about the Ride from Biird’s point of view.
by Karen Allen on Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at 10:05pm
It seems we all start to think of our pending summer plans once the winter holiday season passes. Recently, the requests for more information as to itinerary, what does it cost, what is a conga-line, how do I join in, etc start to pick up. When I look back to Conga III, there may have been some teaching moments that will help create a safe Conga IV for you in 2011. Here are some of my thoughts and please don’t assume they are shared by others.

You can Conga anywhere. You can Conga in your hometown. You can join the Conga for a mile, 100 miles or go whatever you are comfortable with. A Conga-line is simply the route you are taking to get from here to there. There will be several lines to Shell.
